Kolkata, Sep 7: A day after promising to subject its candidate in opposition to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee within the Bhabanipur bypoll, the Congress on Tuesday took a U-turn over its stand and stated the celebration is not going to pit anyone in opposition to the Trinamool Congress supremo. As instructed by the AICC, the Congress will neither subject any candidate reverse Banerjee nor marketing campaign in opposition to her within the run as much as the September 30 bypoll, state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury advised reporters in Baharampur.
On Monday, Chowdhury had advised reporters that the Congress would subject a candidate in opposition to Banerjee in Bhabanipur, claiming that almost all of PCC members have been in favour of such a choice. Two months in the past, Chowdhury had advocated not fielding any candidate in opposition to the chief minister out of political courtesy.
Reacting to the AICC choice, CPIM chief Sujan Chakraborty stated, “We’ll subject a candidate as these against the TMC and BJP wanted an alternate. We can’t ask the Congress to alter its choice.” .
